I choose to sleep.
Duration: 15 hours / 3 days
In this performance, the artist instigates audience interaction through her inaction. Viewers become hyper-aware of their presence, behaviors, and actions as they navigate around LAM’s sleeping body in the social context of the gallery. During the performance, the artist is physically present, as her body occupies the exhibition space; however, her absence is signaled by her state of unconsciousness and is further marked by silence and inactivity. The intimacy of sleep and dreams is wholly singular and personal. When we are sleeping, we are not performing. I choose to sleep. is unique in that it subverts overt performative elements such as movement, action, impersonation, and personification, instead implicating the audience to perform in the space that surrounds the artist.
